Research Paper Rough Drafts

Q Research Paper The student may select any topic that relates to the time period 1500-present, in European or world history. This can be a specific person (Isaac Newton, Queen Victoria, Mahatma Ghandi, Catherine the Great, etc); a battle in a war (Battle of Britain, Battle of Waterloo, etc); a topic of social or scientific history (technology of war in the 17th, 18th, 19th centuries; changes in medical technology; pets; hair-styles; clothing; technology of bathrooms; Great Exhibition of 1851, etc). The only requirement is that a) it be within the time frame covered by the course (17th-20th centuries in Europe – please do not recycle US History papers) b) you get the professor’s approval for the topic before Wednesday, March 30 and c) that you write the paper yourself. Sources for the paper MUST include at least one (1) primary source – that is, a document that originated in the time about which you are writing. (A letter from Marie Antoinette would be an example, or a newspaper article written the day after the Battle of Waterloo). You must use at least THREE other sources for your paper. If you use the textbook, it does NOT count towards the total of 3 sources. You can use it, but if you do, there must be 3 OTHER sources as well. Papers MUST include a Bibliography or “Works Cited” page, and you must include notes (MLA-style notes in parentheses work best for an online paper) telling me where you got either direct quotes, or specific pieces of information. The only requirement is that a) it be within the time frame covered by the course (17th-20th centuries in Europe or world history – please do not recycle US History papers) b) you get the professor’s approval for the topic before Wednesday, March 30 and c) that you write the paper yourself. The paper will be due on the last day of class, Friday, May 27. The research paper will be worth a maximum of 80 points. (That’s more than a test and a half). Things I am looking for: You must have notes – MLA-style notes in parentheses work best – telling me where in the document, or in the research source, you got what you’re telling me. (For example, if you tell me, “Julius Caesar wore a wreath on his head to cover up his bald spot,” tell me where you got this from:(Smith, John, Personal Conversations with Caesar, pg. 37). You must have a “Works Cited” page – a separate page at the end of the paper listing all your sources, both print and internet. URLs for the Internet sources; print sources, author’s name first (in alphabetical order), then title of book or article, place of publication, date of publication. If it’s an article, tell me what journal it was in, plus date. If it’s a documentary, give me the date. Material quoted from books, websites, or the primary source document itself MUST be in quotes (“ ”) and MUST be cited (tell me where you got it). Facts that are not direct quotes should be cited in a note. (Where did you find this information?) Please review the syllabus (in the "General Information" module) on the subject of plagiarism. Turn in rough draft of research paper for instructor review. ASSIGNMENT OPTIONAL.

The Crimean War of 1853-56 was the first major military conflict in Europe since the Napoleonic Wars and, as such, often attracted historians’ attention. Fought between Russia and a coalition of European powers together with the Ottoman Empire, the conflict demonstrated considerable advances in technology, communication, and the art of war. As the name suggests, an important part of the conflict was the campaign fought in the Crimean peninsula between the defending Russians and the expeditionary force of British, French, Ottoman, and later Sardinian troops. The most famous events of the war, such as the Charge of the Light Brigade, were associated with the siege of the Russian naval base in Sevastopol. However, this siege would have been impossible if not for the allied victory in the first major battle of the Crimean campaign.
